Most of us are familiar with the tradition of back-to-school shopping as summer comes to a close; making sure kids get the latest trending shoes before they're sold out, fresh new back packs to match their first day of school outfit, and school supplies in their favorite color. However, for some families, their worries are much bigger. They may be facing homelessness, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and more which can impact their ability to send children to school with the necessities. This is where local nonprofits, like The Open Door Network, step in to provide much needed relief.
Bakersfield NAWBO Member, Neetu Jhaj sits on the board for The Open Door Network. As a mom, woman business owner, and community advocate, she spoke passionately to her fellow NAWBO members about The Open Door Network and their need for volunteers. Her NAWBO sisters were so inspired, they rallied behind her to volunteer for this year's back to school drive.
X # of items were donated from the local chapter and x # of volunteers turned out to help x # of children with their back-to-school preparation.
NAWBO members understand the importance of supporting the community in which they do business, and bringing other women along as they learn and grow. The Open Door Network is a perfect place to help empower and support women going through challenging times. You never know when that woman will be a customer, a business owner, or inspire the next generation of business owners that help form our local economy.
"We've all had help along the way and it's important we perpetuate that cycle to foster growth." -Megan Rios, NAWBO Bakersfield President
